Note: This is not to defend the Philippine President. This is a cry for truthful and reliable news.
“Hitler massacred 3 million Jews. There are 3 million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them. At least, if Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have ….. my victims, all criminals, to finish a problem of my country, and save the next generation.”
The above quoted words are the exact words of the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in response to a question asked by a reporter. Unfortunately, certain media groups have twisted such words and instead chose a more “marketable” headline which states, “Philippines’ Duterte likens himself to Hitler, wants to kill millions of drug users.“ This has resulted to misplaced and inapt anger on certain parts of the world calling the Philippine President’s language objectionable and inappropriate.
We live in a world where we almost have access to everything. In this country, democracy cloaks us with the right to know almost anything yet we still choose to have different versions of truth. The saddest thing is, the Philippines, as a country is already geographically divided and we still prefer to be divided as a nation.
The technological advancement which the modern world has brought us allows us to verify information with just one click. Unfortunately, it seems that people tend to forget the basic things of verifying information and let ourselves rely on headlines and misleading news. We fail to dig things deeper. If we take few more minutes and watch the actual video, we would know that Duterte’s remarks are of concern to the next generation and doesn’t have any offensive intentions. He has expressed his way to fend off other people’s comparison of him to Hitler.
People of the world, we have all the resources to know what’s the story behind every news. We should not, by any means, allow ourselves to chew whatever is being offered to us. We have the choice to know more and to refuse being misguided and misinformed. To the Filipino people, it is about time that we stop making fun of ourselves in the international arena by showing them how divided we are. Be the change that we long desire. Let’s stop this internal strife and instead give our President a chance to lead us.
